According to a January 2000 report conducted by TEEN CARAVAN, 91% of American teens use the Internet. The average teenager in the US spends approximately 5 hours a week online.

  • 12% access the Internet from the library

  • 89% use the Internet for school research
  • 68% use it for e-mail

Source: TEEN CARAVAN survey conducted January 16 - 20 among a national sample of 1002 teens, ages 12-17, 911 of whom reported using the Internet. The margin of error is +/- 3%.

Young Consumers & Shopping Online
According to Forrester Research, online consumers ages 16- 22-years-old will spend about $4.5 billion online this year -- more than 10% of their disposable income.

The report reveals that this age group shops mainly for health products, cosmetics and grocery items. Of those who have been buying online for six months or more, 21% of young consumers have bought PC hardware online, as opposed to only 5% of adults.

Key findings:

  • About 16% of 16- 22-year-olds have bought consumer electronics online, versus 10% of adults
  • Nearly 6% have bought groceries online, compared with 2% of adults
  • Roughly 60% of young Net buyers have used online price comparison sites, versus two-thirds of adults

In addition, Forrester found that 45% of young Netizens have visited a demand-driven pricing site, most often setting prices for travel, books or software. They complete their shopping with coupons, with 60% visiting sites that feature printable coupons.

Teenage Market Predictions

  • By 2002, kids and teens will account for over $1.3 billion of the e-commerce dollars spent. (Teenagers spent $141 billion overall last year. One survey says they spend an average $94 a week -- that's $5,000  a year!)
  • 67% of online teens and 37% of online kids say they've researched or bought products on the Internet.
  • "Today’s kids are sophisticated and see the Internet as a preferred tool for information gathering; commerce is a natural progression," says Anya Sacharow, an analyst with Jupiter’s Consumer Content Strategies.
